Illinois Writing Project and GSU Offer Writing Methods Class

University Park, IL, April 18, 2008 - Teachers of all grade levels and any subjects are invited to take part in a remarkable educational opportunity this summer at Governors State University. GSU and the Illinois Writing Project are collaborating to offer a special four-day course, which will emphasize the writing process and how to teach it, use it, and assess the finished product.

The course, Illinois Writing Project-Methods for Teaching Writing, will be taught by veteran teacher and educator of teachers, Judy Johnstone. Johnstone, of Plainfield, earned her master’s degree from Governors State University, taught English at Carl Sandburg High School for 32 years, and has been with the Illinois Writing Project for 25 years.

"We will focus on how writing happens in the classroom and how a teacher facilitates student achievement in writing," said Johnstone. "Writing assignments increase comprehension of all subjects from science and math to basic reading and advanced literature."

To facilitate participation in this program, the course is scheduled as part of GSU's Vacation Education slate of classes. These courses are offered at convenient times during the summer so that educators may improve their skills and still have some time to relax in the summer months.

Illinois Writing Project-Methods for Teaching Writing will be held from Monday, June 15 through Thursday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Governors State University, 1 University Parkway, University Park. Participants may register for EDUC 650W Topics in Professional Development and earn two graduate credit hours. For more information, call (708) 534-4536.
