Congressman Danny K Davis to keynote MLK Celebration

Congressman Danny K. Davis will be the keynote speaker at the Seventh Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration!

The celebration takes place Monday, January 16, 2006 at the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University in University Park Illinois. The celebration begins with a Visual Media Presentation at 10:30 a.m. followed by the main program commencing at 11:00 a.m.

Also featured in the Celebration will be Faces, the National Award winning show choir from Crete Monee High School under the direction of Mr. Jesse Diaz, and Barnabas, men's singing group from New Faith Baptist Church under the direction of Minister Kevon Carter.

The keynote speaker, Congressman Danny K. Davis was chosen by the people of the 7th Congressional District of Illinois on November 5, 1996 and has been a member of Congress since. Despite his lack of seniority in Congress, Congressman Davis has been an effective legislator and has been able to move major bills to passage with an articulate voice for his constituents.

Before taking public office Congressman Davis had productive careers as an educator, community organizer, and civil rights advocate. He has received hundreds of awards and citations for his work in education, human relations, politics and advocacy. Congressman Davis earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and subsequently earned Masters and Doctorate degrees respectively from Chicago State University and the Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Congressman Davis continues the tradition of outstanding speakers at this Celebration. Previous speakers include Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, Father Michael Pfleger, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., Rev. Dr. Frank Thomas, Rev. Dr. Willie T. Barrow and Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

The Celebration is hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, an Illinois not-for-profit corporation. Admission to the Celebration is free.
