Vacation Education 2007 Gearing Up for June 13!

School will be out; but learning will be in!

Back again by popular demand, the College of Education will offer special summer courses for teachers. Use these course offerings to enhance your classroom knowledge and skills or perhaps to move toward your next contract lane change. The courses are scheduled in order to leave time for summer vacations, special times with family and friends. Even relaxation!

Vacation Education courses will be offered from June 13 through August 2. All courses are for three credit hours, are a great value, and are timed to fit your summer schedule.

The following courses are scheduled for this summer

Issues in Education (EDUC 610) - Explore trends in instructional practice with emphasis on identifying current educational issues and problems and how instructional practice is related to improvement. T & Th from 9:30am - 12:20pm

Teacher Leadership and School Improvement (EDUC 710) - Investigate the role of the reflective teacher leader in school efficacy, curriculum development, and school improvement. Pre- or co-requisite is EDUC 610. T & Th from 1:30pm - 4:20pm

Note: EDUC 610 and 710 are the introductory courses for the Master of Arts degree in Education.

Teaching Mathematics to Low Achieving Students (EDUC 632) - Examines the characteristics and needs of low achieving students. Explores content and teaching strategies and emphasizes diagnostic/evaluative procedures. Prerequisite: An undergraduate mathematics education course or EDUC640. M & W from 9:30am - 12:20pm

Teaching and Learning Mathematics (EDUC 640) -Examines methods of teaching mathematical concepts in elementary and junior high schools based on learning theory, historical trends in mathematics education, and current research. Includes the roles of concrete materials, textbooks, and diagnosis in the teaching of mathematics. Prerequisite: An undergraduate mathematics education course. M & W from 12:30 - 3:20pm

Educational Psychology Applied to the Middle School (EDUC 642) - Examines the history, philosophy, and psychology surrounding the Middle School. Focuses on a number of related topics including teaching a diverse Middle School population, including all students in instruction, and the psychological, emotional and physical development of the Middle School learner. Prerequisite: Teacher certification/graduate status. T & Th from 9:30am - 12:20pm

Curriculum and Instruction in the Middle School (EDUC 643) -Examines the curriculum and instruction in the Middle School. Focuses on a number of related topics including instructional techniques for teaching in a diverse Middle School population and the ideal curriculum to meet the needs of the Middle School/Junior High students. Explores teaching methods that assist with the cognitive growth of Middle School/Junior High students. Prerequisites: EDUC640 and teaching certification. T & Th from 1:30 - 4:20pm

Student Learning and Assessment (EDUC 800) - Examines current theories of learning, intelligence, and motivation. Provides students with working knowledge of assessment techniques and how to relate student assessment and views of learning to educational practices and teacher efficacy. Prerequisites: EDUC610 and EDUC710. T & Th from 9:30am - 12:20pm
