Using Digitized Primary Sources from the Library of Congress's American Memory Collection to Enliven Nursing Issues and History Curriculum
Paul's project is: Mary Ann "Mother" Bickerdyke, An Illinois Civil War Nurse
Abstract: This project will explore the history of one of Illinois most famous nurses using primary and secondary source materials. Materials related to the life of Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke, an American Civil War nurse, healer, and social activist, will be located and reviewed through web based research, bibliographic database searching, and exploration of the Amercian Memory collections of the Library of Congress. Participants will become more familiar with current library research tools and be able to discuss the life of Mary Ann Bickerdyke, her career as a nurse during the Civl War, and the significance of her nursing work during the Civil War, and post-war career as a social worker and advocate.
