J.R.R. Tolkien: The Children of Hurin

"HarperCollins hopes to tap into a 15-million-strong UK fan base for Lord of the Rings as it publishes The Children of Hurin, the first complete book by J R R Tolkien since The Silmarillion was published in 1977. The book, published on 17 April as an 18.99 pounds hardback and a 60 pounds deluxe slipcased edition, has been put together from Tolkien's drafts by his son Christopher. It will feature eight paintings and 25 pencil sketches by Alan Lee, who illustrated editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings" - The Bookseller

Congratulations Lydia!

Congratulations Lydia, Professor of Library Science for presenting at Illinois Online Conference - February 15, 2007

Lydia's presentation was "Using Library of Congress primary source materials"

Here is an overview of Lydia's presentation:

Conference participants will be introduced to the Library of Congress primary source materials. There are five major sections of the Library of Congress, including Library Catalogs, American History, Exhibitions, Global Gateway, and Thomas. My Adventure of the American Mind project, "Women Physicians: Changing the Face of Medicine" will be used as the basis of the discussion. The Adventure of the American Mind (AAM) is a pilot project funded by the Library of Congress, which began in 1999. It was designed to train in-service and pre-service classroom teachers and college teacher education faculty to access, use and produce curriculum utilizing the Internet and the digitized primary source materials from the collections of the Library of Congress.

Using Digitized Primary Sources from the Library of Congress's American Memory Collection to Enliven Nursing Issues and History Curriculum

Paul's project is: Mary Ann "Mother" Bickerdyke, An Illinois Civil War Nurse

Abstract: This project will explore the history of one of Illinois most famous nurses using primary and secondary source materials. Materials related to the life of Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke, an American Civil War nurse, healer, and social activist, will be located and reviewed through web based research, bibliographic database searching, and exploration of the Amercian Memory collections of the Library of Congress. Participants will become more familiar with current library research tools and be able to discuss the life of Mary Ann Bickerdyke, her career as a nurse during the Civl War, and the significance of her nursing work during the Civil War, and post-war career as a social worker and advocate.

New Mystery and Detective Fiction Reading Group

Thank you Dean Casey for the following information:

The Friends of the GSU Library is sponsoring a new mystery and detective fiction reading group called Friends of Mysteries. The first meeting will be Tuesday, April 3, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria Annex. Bring your own lunch. We will discuss “Eisenheim the Illusionist,” a short story by Steven Millhauser in his book, The Barnum Museum: Stories. The book can be purchased on Amazon.com or be ordered at Borders. This short story is the basis for the recent movie, The Illusionist. Additionally, we will decide on mystery and detective fiction that we will read and discuss in future months. Becky Nugent and I will lead April’s discussion. The group is open to Friends of the GSU Library and the larger GSU community. Please join us!
