Mini Silent Auction

The Friends of the GSU Library thanks everyone who worked and supported the recent book sale and silent auction. Their efforts will continue with a mini silent auction, taking place in the Library, through May 31. Items and the bid sheet will be on display in a case located near the circulation desk. The items up for bid include a print by photographer Jerome Robbins. Bidding starts at only $20. Make your bid today to continue your support of the Friends of the GSU Library.

A new page on culture!

You and a friend (or two recipients of your choice) can enjoy two tickets to a Newberry Library Consort Music Program in the Chicago area. If you attend a performance at the library, you might want to go early and browse through the library. You can count your chickens

This is truly the gift for someone who has everything…but somewhere to incubate an egg. This Lyon Egg Hatcher comes with everything necessary to bring fowl into this world except fertilized eggs. It would be a great gift for a child: Imagine the youngster watching with wonder as baby chicks hatch! It might be a great school project, but check with the teacher! Also, it would be a nice present for that friend in the country who raises a few chickens. Or, maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted! Regardless, now’s your chance to “unscramble” your gift-giving. Its value is a mystery, but it’s truly an “egg-siting” item!

Relax, refresh and read!

books.jpg

If you (or a friend) are health-conscious (and who isn’t) here are the perfect gifts. Let's start with a relaxing 1/2-hour massage at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Center in Evergreen Park or Chicago Ridge. Now that you're relaxed and comfortable, it's time to open a few good books. “You, the Smart Patient” offers the wisdom and wit of Drs. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz to help you make choices to obtain the best health care available. It also offers information on tracing your family medical history, the complexities of the health care industry and the option of alternative medicine. It’s the perfect prescription! Now that you are a smart patient, you can become even smarter. You can study the evolution of the medical field in different cultures over time in “Medicine: A History of Healing” by Roy Porter. The book delivers insight into modern medicine by examining its past. Two sets are available for bidding. A set of the books and masssage are valued at about $75, but you can probably get them for less than your co-pay at this Silent Auction!

"Jump...for my love"

massai.jpg

Picture yourself here in beautiful Kenya, viewing one of the most amazing cultural experiences you'll ever see. If you can’t travel half-way around the world yourself, you can still enjoy the richness and wonder of African culture in your home with "Maasai Dancers 1," an original signed photograph by Mel Katz. The photograph captures a Maasai mating ritual in which the men's attractiveness to women is determined by the height of their jumps. It is matted, framed and ready to grace any wall. The framed artwork is 15" x 12," and the photograph itself is 8 3/4" x 6 1/2." It is valued at $75, but the beauty of it is priceless.

“Fore” someone special!

golf.jpg

Got a golfer on your gift list? How about this package that offers a little bit of everything – from a round of golf to somewhere to display the memories of that hole-in-one! You’ll be an “eagle” in any golfer’s eyes with this gift pack. Start off with a round of golf for a foursome, including carts, any Monday through Friday (except holidays) at University Golf Club in University Park. The Club also is including two 1/2-hour private golf lessons and a dine-in certificate for up to $50 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. any day of the week in the Urban Room. Then, as a matter of “course,” the golfer can start with this set of two Top Flight XL2000 balls and some tees. Then, he or she can use this new pivot tool to keep the grounds player-friendly. Golfers will be able to “count” on accuracy with a score keeper. It sure gets hot out there, so how about some cold water stored in this spacious, easy-to-carry golf pack? And after that hole-in-one, friends will be “green” with envy when they see that trophy presentation photograph displayed in this cute frame (holds a 3 ½” x 5” print) by Sports Corner. Don’t forget to don that great “Hole-in-one” hat! So if you have a friend who thinks winter is just a bad season for golfing, swing over to put your bid in, and you’ll be right on par. Valued at $375.

Change is good, and so is nature

And change sure can add up. Watch your spare change grow into dollars with the Perfect Solutions Digital Coin Counting Money Jar, which comes with batteries, but sorry, no money. It’s a great gift to spark a child to start saving! The youngster will love to place the coins in the slot, hear the clink as they fall, and watch them add up, hoping soon to have enough to buy a new toy. Or, use it yourself to save for an emergency purchase or a special treat. It’s a fun way to find out how much change really was in your pocket (or at the bottom of your purse). It’s valued at $30, but you’ll save that in no time. Now that you've saved some change, you can use it to drive to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Lincoln Park. This package comes with a One-Day Family Pass, valued at $30.

Analyze this

100_0139_edited.jpg

Most people know that Sigmund Freud was the founder of modern psychoanalysis. But Freud had a more artful side: He collected antiquities. You can share Freud’s enjoyment of the finer things with these two small resin replicas of some of his artifacts. The originals are in the The Freud Museum in London. The original bronze statuette of Venus (the goddess of love) is an example of work from the time of the Roman Empire. The resin replica is about 5” tall. And if you ever lay awake, hour after hour in the dark of the night, wondering what Etruscans did for air fresheners, wonder no more. Here is a resin replica of an Etruscan bronze balsamarium, a small vase used for perfumed oil, incense or ointments, decorated with the heads of a satyr and a maenad, male and female followers of the mythical Dionysos, the god of wine. The replica is about 4 ½” tall. Two sets are available and valued at $18 per set. So now you can satisfy your id and ego!

The sets were donated by a Friend of the GSU Library.

The Friends of the GSU Library will have this and many other exciting items available at the Silent Auction from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Hall of Governors at GSU.
